Jerry west finals record

Whether this is right or wrong, well, that’s a whole other debate! West averaged 38 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists per game.  He also put up a herculean 42 point, 13 rebound, 12 assist triple double in a game 7 loss despite playing with a severely injured hamstring.

  • In 1970 West and the Lakers lost to the New York Knicks.

As an executive, he won multiple championships and was named NBA Executive of the Year twice in 1995 and 2007.

Jerry West went to the NBA Finals nine times as you can see above. The seven previous losses before he finally won his first and only NBA title made it that much sweeter too. There were some brilliant individual performances in this series from the Celtics and many people argue that John Havlicek or Bill Russell should have won the award.

As an executive, West’s career is nearly unparalleled and certainly one of the best executives in the history of the league.

In the face of that, we’re certain West would trade a couple of those championships to have sipped champagne in the locker room during his actual playing days.

It’s one thing to not win an NBA championship, it’s another to reach the pinnacle of the postseason and come up short multiple times.

We don’t see this ever being repeated, as the award is now given to the best player on the winning team — a remarkable achievement that stands as a testament to his individual brilliance, something that any personal statement writer would be proud to highlight. Some of his most notable accolades include:

    • 1x finals MVP
    • 14x All-Star
    • 1x All-Star game MVP
    • 10x All-NBA First Team
    • 4x All-NBA Defensive First Team
Add to that a scoring title and assist title, and you have one of the most versatile two-way point guards of all time.

    It worked.

The 1971-1972 Lakers are in the conversation for greatest team in NBA history. Firstly, he is the only player – on the losing team – ever to win a finals MVP . We don’t have to look any further than all the LeBron James haters that exist today. Despite this 1-8 losing record, no one can deny the abilities he had, the greatness he showed and how he carried himself night after night on the court.

The same goes with Jerry West, if there’s a knock on  West, the biggest has to be his inability to bring home the NBA championship. Unfortunately, West’s long-time partner Elgin Baylor retired at the beginning of the season and missed out on the chance at winning a title.

Despite being such a phenomenal player, his horrendous finals record often overshadows what West achieved.

If you are tobelieve ESPN or SLAM lists of greatest of all-time are accurate, you’ll see West’s namefall somewhere below Oscar Robertson and Kobe Bryant but above Karl Malone and Elgin Baylor, meaning West typically falls in the latter half of the top 20. They won 33 straight games and set a then-record with 69 regular season wins.

They cruised through the playoffs as well and defeated the New York Knicks to win the NBA title.

Additionally, there are unfortunately some iconic players who are remembered for the wrong reasons. Bill Russell led in every other category, including, as was almost always the case with him, wins.

  • In 1966, West’s Lakers were defeated by….

The 1969 NBA Finals were between archrivals the Celtics and Lakers, and the Celtics eventually won 4-3.

Which record is better is up for debate. But West lost more NBA Finals by one.
