The fictional cousins

Morris regretted killing off the Dalton gang, who were popular with readers. After he was hanged for his crimes, Joe, William, Jack and Averell were informed that they will inherit his fortune if they kill the judge and the jurors who sentenced him.

  • Artistic License – Law: As the reader can probably guess, there's absolutely no way Henry's will was legal; while it was certainly within his rights to leave his fortune to whoever he wanted (assuming it wasn't confiscated by the courts after he was caught), that does not include commissioning a crime as a condition, especially not something as serious as murder.

The entirely fictional brothers are Joe, Jack, William and Averell. She treats her grown-up sons as if they were still children: washing the mouth of one of them with soap when he uses abusive language and even spanking Joe. In La Ballade des Dalton, it's commented she used to remind Jack to put on his sweater whenever she took them to raids.

As a result of his good behavior and his idiocy, his rewards for his capture are often very low unlike his brothers. Needless to say, Luke, being Born Lucky, easily survived the first round and easily tricked him into believing he was losing so he could take him without killing him.

  • Idiot Ball: Not as much as Averell, obviously, since he, alongside Jack, is the most sensible member of the crew, but some stories do show that when Averell isn't around, William is the one who takes over the role as the family dunce:
    • In one Rantanplan comic, when the brothers escape prison to look for the kidnapped Averell, William makes so many reckless decisions that Joe at one point attacks him with an angry "You...

In doing so, he foiled Edgar Crook's plan to cheat the settlers out of their money and their lands by having Luke overcome every attempt at sabotage Crook threw the settlers' way.

    • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: His impatience proves to be his downfall at times.
    • Trigger-Happy: His answer for the slightest provocation is to use his gun.
    • The Un-Favourite: He has a big issue with Ma Dalton liking Averell more than him.

Afterwards, she lives off the charity of the townsfolk.

    • Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Aside from the Dalton family, Ma Dalton is also loosely based on criminal matriarch Kate "Ma" Barker.
    • Villain with Good Publicity: Townsfolks used to go with her mock hold up and give her groceries for free since she was a kindly old woman who colored the Wild West with her eccentricity.

The 2007 animated film Go West! A Lucky Luke Adventure produced by Xilam stars the Daltons as the main characters, even though the comic The caravan that served as inspiration to the film does not.[9]

Xilam has also produced an animated television series titled The Daltons, focusing on the characters of the Daltons.

In the New Adventures episode "The Daltons' Baby", he objects along with William and Averell to Joe's decision to leave the baby to the vultures, demonstrating that killing babies is off-limits for them.

    • Greek Chorus: Between their more fleshed-out brothers, William and Jack function as this most of the time. And after the brothers split up in "To each on their own" Averell befriends an Italian chef who he helps by working in the kitchen, expanding the line of dishes and later becomes involved with extortion of other surrounding restaurants and Maffia practices to expand the brand.

In "Cavalier seul", William becomes the boss of an illegal gambling hole, while Jack becomes a corrupt politician. She immediately goes to get them out of her clutches.

Ma: A woman! Goscinny himself once pointed out that Joe is merely the most evil of the Daltons and that evil does not equal smart.

    • Spanner in the Works: In Go West!

In the The Daltons cartoon (one of the adaptations where he's the one named "William"), he's portrayed as a big reader, which means he's the most knowledgeable about things like history and different cultures, sometimes acting as Mr. Exposition to his brothers.

These Daltons have appeared in many of Lucky Luke's adventures, typically breaking out of jail at the beginning and being sent back by Luke at the end. However, in Lone Riders, he is able to cook perfectly with an Italian pizzaiolo, possible because the latter is doing most of the actual cooking while Averell provides ideas (together, the two invent the pizza parlor about 50 years or so early).

He boldly calls Lucky Luke out for hand-to-hand combat in the album in which he's introduced (and inadvertently triggers a brawl in the street outside the saloon he and Luke are in). Technically Joe is her favorite, but she treats him with Tough Love because she has higher expectations of Joe. She dotes on Averell because she knows he will never amount to much.

    • Not-So-Harmless Villain: One episode of the Rantanplan series has two scientists kidnapping him and using him as a test subject for a formula attempted to make him intelligent.

At the end of this adventure, all the Daltons are killed in an attempted double bank robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas.

In a later Lucky Luke story, "The Dalton Uncles" (2014), Emmett is shown as having survived the Coffeyville shoot-out, and has since fathered a son which the cousins Daltons are now laying claim to.

He sometimes sings a parody of Lucky Luke's signature tune. Ma Dalton was somewhat inspired by real-life Ma Barker.

    • Never appearing himself, but often mentioned is the Daltons' father. Unlike her sons, Ma Dalton was a popular character in her area and the locals agreed to keep her well stocked in food. They look just like their cousins and again each one of them is taller than the previous one, though they vary in personality: from Joe the hot-tempered leader to the dim-witted childlike Averell whose thoughts are focused mainly on food.

Just as Averell takes after Emmett (Both being the tallest member of the gang) Emmett Jr. takes after Averell in him being an enormous glutton and drawn to Averell's childish nature.

Morris regretted killing the Dalton gang which had proved popular with readers and decided to invent a second quartet that are introduced as cousins of the originals.
