We had 2 hours in a T-shirt, but also got rained on, so we wore everything we had.

  • Decide weather to do the hike in one or two days. The weather can alternate a lot along the way, so you should be prepared for the cold (there will be patches of snow along the way, even in August), but for the powerful sun as well. The church was consecrated by the Lutheran bishop in 1998.

    He is still going strong and enjoys showing the visitors around. You begin by going up 350 wooden steps, but at the end you have a breathtaking view of the waterfall.

    After this, the path continues for a while without any major changes of altitude. The church is a replica of old country churches but the inside decorations are old artefacts from old, bygone churches.

    We did it in the most irresponsible way possible: we got to Throsmork at around 6 p.m. But you can also do the trip in one day, some say even 6 hours. Turns out… it was the best we ever did as well. Skogar is a popular starting point for a hike over the Fimmvorduhals Pass to Thorsmork. Popular options include the Laugahraun lava field loop, Brennisteinsalda, and the climb up Bláhnúkur for panoramic views.

    For more ambitious hikers, Landmannalaugar serves as the starting (or ending) point of the legendary Laugavegur Trail, a 55-km multi-day trek to Þórsmörk.

    The hike is challenging (definitely not for complete beginners), but very doable. Welcome to the land of the elves, where every one hundred steps reveal a new waterfall.

    It is here that you can get a real sense of South Iceland: endless lava fields covered in squishy green moss, troll-like formations, streams of water, canyons and surreal mist.

    Its dramatic landscapes and variety of trails make it the perfect destination for day-trippers, casual hikers, and seasoned adventurers alike.

    The Fimmvörðuháls cottage is set on top of the mountain, with all this fantastic scenery around it. Many hikers decide to spend a few days hiking in the Thorsmork Area and are accommodated in the tourist huts of the tourist associations Utivist at Basar, Ferdafelag Islands (Skagfjordsskali) in Valley Langidalur and Valley Husadalur (Wolcano huts) Skogarfoss.

    Skogar travel guide

    When people want to hike between two places, it is less complicated and much less expensive to rely on the buses than to have one’s own vehicle transported to the end station.

    There is also a small stove (where you can warm the ice to have water), kitchenware and a toilet, all very basic.

    We never thought we would be “eccentric” enough to pay so much for what seemed to be so little. Our recommendation is to take the time and enjoy this south-Icelandic scenery. These hikes allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the area’s natural beauty without requiring extensive preparation or gear.

    The school and the museum were inaugurated in 1949. There are no words for how it feels like up there.

    There were two tents camped near the cottage and the people inside said they lasted well through the cold.

    For those looking for a leisurely exploration, the valley is filled with short and accessible trails that lead through black lava fields, bubbling geothermal vents, and lush moss-covered canyons. We believe 10-12 hours is a more realistic time, especially if you are not a professional hiker.

  • If you do decide to sleep at the hut, be sure to call and book with at least one month in advance.
  • Don’t believe all the scary stuff they say on the Internet.

    The alluvial plain south of Skogar shows us clearly, that it is possible to turn the grey gravel and sand deserts green again and down by the sea it is possible to spot the harbour seals tumbling in the water.
