You want to interpolate the population value at year 4.

You can use the formula below to interpolate the desired population value:

=GROWTH(B2:B6,A2:A6,4)

The above formula estimates the population value in year 4 as 1,221. This is a simple way, but it usually returns the age in days, so we’ll need to customize the formula to return the age in years.

You can enter the new data point in an appropriate row in your dataset as shown below.

I have shown several ways to interpolate in Excel. The function is mostly used to remove the decimal points in formulas. This function allows you to determine the difference in years, months, or days between two dates.

We’ll use the following example to calculate the age between two dates:

The syntax for this formula is:

=DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, "y")

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to calculate the age between two dates in Excel:

  1. In a cell, type in the equal sign and the “DATEDIF” function.
  1. Select the cell with the start date.
  1. Add a comma and select the cell with the end date.
  1. Add another comma and “y” to return the results in years.
  1. Press “Enter” and drag the formula down to copy it.

The complete formula will be:

=DATEDIF(A2,B2, "y")

To calculate age more precisely, you can include months or days in the formula.

The Frequency Formula

Please note a few things

  1. I am first selecting the range where the formula is supposed to be written. However, in this tutorial, I will only show you how to interpolate in Excel when data has linear and exponential relationships.

    Interpolate in Excel When Data Has Linear Relationship

    In this section, I show you how to do linear interpolation in Excel.

    In linear interpolation, you assume that the change between two known data points is linear, meaning one variable changes at a constant rate relative to the other. 

    Method #1.1: Use the Linear Interpolation Formula

    You can use the linear interpolation formula to interpolate missing values in a dataset with a linear relationship.

    Below is the formula for linear interpolation:

    • (x1​, y1​) and (x2, y2) are the existing data points.
    • x is the value at which you want to interpolate.
    • y is the estimated value at x.

    Consider the dataset below, where column A represents x-values, the time it takes for an athlete to walk a certain number of miles (y-values), shown in column B.

    You want to interpolate the missing distance value in cell B6.

    To estimate the missing value y at x = 3.25, you can linearly interpolate between the points (2.75,11) and (3.5,14).

    For x = 3.25:

    • x1 = 2.75, y1 = 11
    • x2 = 3.5, y2 = 14

    You can plug the cells containing the values above into the linear interpolation formula to interpolate the missing value, as shown in the formula below:

    =11+(3.25-2.75)*(14-11)/(3.5-2.75)

    The interpolated value of y when x = 3.25 is 13.

    Note: If you have multiple x-values for which you need y-values, you can drag the formula down to copy it to other cells.

    Method #1.2: Use the FORECAST.LINEAR Function

    Although the FORECAST.LINEAR function is mainly used for extrapolation, computing a future value along a linear trend using known values, you can also apply it for interpolation.

    The syntax of the function:

    FORECAST.LINEAR (x, known-ys, known_xs)

    The ‘x’ argument is required and specifies the value you want to interpolate at.

    The ‘known-ys’ argument is required and is the set of existing dependent (y) values.

    The ‘known-xs’ argument is required and is the set of existing independent (x) values.

    Consider the dataset below, where column A shows the time it takes for an athlete to walk a certain number of miles (x-values), shown in column B (y-values).

    Several years later (now) when I finally believe I have understood its meaning and application, I want to keep it really simple for you and talk about 3 different ways to create it in Excel

    Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create an age calculator in Excel:

    1. Create a cell for the date of birth.
    1. Create another section for the current age.
    2. In the cell for the current age, add the formula: =DATEDIF($B$1,TODAY(),"y")

    If you want to calculate a person’s age, all you need to do now is put their date of birth in cell B1.

    This lets you quickly find the age of a person with just their date of birth.

    Similarly, in radioactive decay, the quantity decreases at a rate proportional to its current amount.

    Method #2.1: Use Exponential Interpolation Formula

    You can use the exponential interpolation formula to interpolate missing values in a dataset with an exponential relationship.

    Below is the exponential interpolation formula:

    • (x1​, y1​) and (x2, y2) are the existing data points.
    • x is the value at which you want to interpolate.
    • y is the estimated value at x.

    How to create an age calculator in Excel

    The complete formula will be:

    =DATEDIF(B2, TODAY(), "m")

    To get the age in days, you can follow the same procedure and replace the “m” with “d” in the formula.

    How To Calculate Age Between Two Dates

    You can also use the “DATEDIF” function to calculate the age between two dates in Excel.

    You can use a combination of functions, such as “DATEDIF,” “YEAR,” “MONTH,” “DAY,” and “TODAY.”

    You’ll need to combine three formulas for each of the formats.

    Here’s a step-by-step guide for how to use the formula to calculate age in years, months, and days:

    1. In a cell, type in the “equals” (=) sign and the “DATEDIF” function.
    1. Select the cell with the DOB.
    1. Now we start with the first formula for the year.

      To include months in the calculation, change the last argument of the formula to “ym.

      The formula would be:

      =DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, "ym")

      To include days in the calculation, change the last argument of the formula to “md.

      The formula would be:

      =DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, "md")

      How To Calculate Age on a Specific Date

      You can also use a specific date instead of using today or the current date.

      The most commonly used function is the “DATEDIF” function. Read on to learn more.

      Here’s how Excel can calculate DOB to age:

      1. In a cell, type in the “equals” sign (=) and the “DATEDIF” function.
      2. Select the cell with the date of birth.
      3. Add a comma and write the “TODAY” function.
      4. Add another comma and “y” in quotation marks to return the results in years.
      5. Press “Enter” and drag the formula down to copy it.

      How Do You Calculate Age in Excel?

      Usually, you'd simply add 50 years to the person's birthdate.

      For instance, in population growth, the larger the population gets, the faster it grows. How do you know on what date he completes his 50 years of age? This conventional age formula can also be used in Excel.

      Assuming a birthdate is in cell B2, the formula to calculate age in years goes as follows:

      The first part of the formula (TODAY()-B2) returns the difference between the current date and date of birth is days, and then you divide that number by 365 to get the numbers of years.

      The formula is obvious and easy-to-remember, however, there is a tiny problem.

      This function also works by subtracting the date of birth from the end date, like the previous function. DATE(C3, 1, 1).

      The DATE function extracts the year from cell B3, makes a complete date using the month and day numbers that you supplied (1-Jan in this example), and passes that date to DATEDIF. For instance the values between 11k – 11,999 are not same as 12k range in frequency formula

      This is how the frequency formula reads the ranges and that is why the results vary a bit

      Add “DATEDIF(B2,TODAY()

    1. Add the word “months” in quotations to separate the years from the rest.
    1. Finally, the last formula for the days is: DATEDIF(B2,TODAY(),"MD")
    1. Add the word “days” in quotation marks.
    1. Close the brackets and press “Enter.”
    1. Copy the formula to the rest of the cells.

    The age will be calculated and displayed in cell B2, showing the years, months, and days.

    With this formula, you can calculate the age from a birthday and display it in years, months, and days in Excel.
